Who are we? :
The Municipality of Halandri is one of the largest municipalities of the region of Attica, Greece, that covers an area of approximately 11 sq.km. and hosts more than 74,000 permanent inhabitants.
Halandri has a long-standing experience relevant to sustainable resources management. The Municipality has been participating actively in several EU funded projects such as HORIZON ToNoWaste, HORIZON 2020 Waste4Think and FoodRUs, UIA Cultural Hidrant and Erasmus+ projects such as Food Connections and Power Saving Check Goes Citizens. The projects focus on environmental protection, circular economy and sustainable management of several waste streams, social welfare, cultural heritage highlighting and public bioclimatic building upgrading. It also participates in a number of networks, programs and cooperation schemes dealing with a variety of issues, all towards the scope of improving citizens’ and visitors’ everyday life.
In 2015 the Municipality has developed the local Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan funded by the EU (NSRF 2014-2020) that was fostering the separate biowaste collection. Along with NTUA and ENBIO, Halandri developed a scheme for biowaste collection and valorization within the concept of circular economy. In 2022 the Municipality adopted the UN DG 12.3 and started working on food waste prevention systematically by establishing the Food Loss and Waste Prevention Unit. Moreover, the Municipality aims to establish a power community.
The city council of Halandi and extended network of city councillors and associated scientists constitute a highly dynamic team of experts that wishes to engage citizens and induce a shift towart circular economy.
