January marked the beginning of the biowaste collection trial conducted by Métropole Rouen Normandie in the city of Sotteville-lès-Rouen. Equipped with bio-bins, nearly 10 000 residents will receive support and can test sorting and collection at a voluntary drop-off point. In the region, 60 kg of food waste per inhabitant is discarded annually, constituting 20% of household waste containers that end up being incinerated. A study conducted in collaboration with ADEME helped define solutions tailored to the residents' needs. Thus, Métropole Rouen Normandie will offer sorting solutions through composting or voluntary drop-off points. Regarding collection at voluntary drop-off points, the Metropolis wanted to test the system before generalising it. Experimenting on a smaller scale allows for the selection of appropriate equipment, observation of user behavior, and better assistance in changing their practices. The city of Sotteville-lès-Rouen, already deeply committed to biowaste sorting, volunteered to host this trial.
