Bruxelles-Propreté has embarked on a pioneering pilot experiment regarding urban cleanliness in the Brussels-Capital Region. Since the end of March, four household waste trucks, which are used almost daily to empty public bins, have also been equipped with cameras, computers, and antennas to assess the cleanliness of a large number of streets (337 kilometers of streets). In practice, the system uses artificial intelligence to identify and classify waste on the streets, including sidewalks. The cameras precisely identify the most common types of waste in Brussels (cigarette butts, paper and plastic, cans, dog feces, glass, etc.) and associate them with locations and times. The information is then transmitted to a server to be assembled into a comprehensive map. Thanks to this system, Brussels-Cleanliness will be able to objectively assess the cleanliness level of the targeted streets.
