Since 2015, ACR+ member OVAM has been examining twice a year the amount of litter in Flanders, in order to ascertain whether Flanders meets its target of reducing litter by 20% by 2022. Compared to 2019, the 2021 tonnages show a decrease of about 20% for litter and of about 3% for fly-tipping. Compared to the baseline in 2015, there is an 11% decrease for litter. This decrease may be an indication that the litter policy is starting to bear fruit. However, there is no structural downward trend yet. Indeed, the target from the Household and Similar Industrial Waste Implementation Plan 2016-2022 to reduce the amount by 20% by 2022 compared to 2015 was not met. The results should therefore be seen mainly as an encouragement to continue and further strengthen the litter policy.
