Flemish household waste bag contains an average of more than 35% by weight of recyclable bio-waste, despite well-established green waste collection (only garden waste) across Flanders and a biodegradable waste collection (vegetable, fruit and garden waste) in most municipalities. ACR+ member OVAM studied the economic, social and ecological impact of a number of collection and processing scenarios for bio-waste. The study also examined the impact of the pricing policy. The study shows that the organic waste collection combined with pre-fermentation and post-composting leads to the highest reduction potential with the lowest environmental impact. The downside is a large social cost, mainly due to logistical costs and the relatively high processing price. But for any collection scenario, a well thought-out tariff policy and optimal collection frequency of bio-waste and household waste are absolute requirements, according to the study.Source: www.ovam.be (in Dutch)
