Last week saw the launch of the Green Sports Hub, a new European project supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the EU. Gathering 10 project partners and 14 more associate partners from the a variety of sports, Green Sports Hub has the objective to evolve into a platform which would enable different sport entities but also host cities and regions to review their current environmental practices and adopt necessary improvements.

While the project will be coordinated by Surfrider Foundation Europe, Confédération Européenne de Volleyball and ACR+ will join them in the overall overview of the project as members of the Steering Committee. Rugby Europe, European Athletics, Slovenian National Olympic Committee, Green Cycling Norway and UK Active among other project partners and a dozen more sport entities will ensure the transversal approach the project was based on, covering a whole range of different sports. Nonetheless, cities and regions will be among the direct beneficiaries of the project especially as hosts of various sport events, tournaments and championships. Nantes Metropole, an ACR+ member is one of the associated partners on the project.

The project activities will revolve around sustainability in sports in several different phases. The initial one will see a European-wide diagnostic and analysis of current good and bad environmental practices as well as enabling and inhibiting factors for further environmental improvements in sports. This exercise will provide a substantial input for the development of a self-assessment tool which will be put on disposal to a wide range of potential external beneficiaries, before a tailor-made “Green Sports Playbook” and necessary policy recommendations would be developed to serve as guidance for all the identified measures and improvements to be implemented.

ACR+’s role on the project was given a great importance considering the network’s previous experience in similar projects on applied circular economy solutions in various fields, namely football - acquired through the TACKLE project. ACR+ will have a technical role, overseeing the initial diagnostics and analysis as well as the subsequent development of the technical support mechanisms. ACR+ will also be responsible for the European-wide campaign bringing together various professional and amateur sport organisations, as well as local, regional and national authorities such as municipalities, regions and ministries.
