ACR+ kicked off 2024 activities related to the Thematic Area of Built Environment by joining the Belgian Renovation Week organised by the three Belgian Regions within the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The event focused on the importance of going beyond energy efficiency to analyse the environmental impact of a building, considering the role as well played by the material resources used. Cities are a stock of materials that represent great value for renovation projects, which can limit land use and foster the local reuse of materials. The circular transition of the building sector must be guided by the waste hierarchy increasing the role assigned to prevention measures that can extend the life of existing buildings, reducing the need for new ones. The conference ended with a study visit to two renovation projects based in Brussels that represent great examples of a circular approach in terms of material resources use applied to the construction sector.
