A trial conducted by the ACR+ member The Hague in 2022 showed that the presence of surveillance cameras significantly reduces the amount of litter placed next to containers. On average, there was a 60% decrease in waste bags next to the containers, compared to a 37% decrease in areas without cameras. Interestingly, dummy cameras had the best effect, potentially due to their proximity to the containers. Despite capturing nearly 700 instances of improper waste disposal, the municipality did not issue fines as the individuals could not be identified. Residents reacted positively to the camera installation, requesting cameras in their own neighbourhoods. People who completed the online questionnaire were also positive. Of these, 78% thought it was a good idea to use cameras in litter containers.
