The municipality of The Hague has created a smoke-free zone aiming to prevent pollution caused by floating cigarette butts. The smoke-free stretch of beach was inaugurated and decorated with the unveiling of a special artwork created by the organisation TrashUre Hunt – a fish made from cigarette butts. This initiative follows a trial period during the final weeks of the 2023 beach season when The Hague City Council and TrashUre Hunt gained initial experiences with the voluntarily smoke-free beach section. Once cigarette butts land on the beach, they are extremely difficult to clean up as beach cleaners and tractors cannot filter cigarette filters from the sand. The smoke-free zone aims to prevent further cigarette butt accumulation on the beach. TrashUre Hunt has been committed to keeping The Hague beaches clean for over a decade by organising beach clean-ups, among other activities.
