Faced with an increase in the production of waste per inhabitant, combined with stagnation in the rates of waste separation, ACR+ member the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) has concluded that the model so far in force, based mostly on voluntary collection with containers on the streets, has reached its limits. Considering also that the achievement of European objectives cannot be based only on education and environmental communication campaigns aimed at citizens, AMB concluded that changes must be made in the collection systems.

Thus, AMB will offer a technical and economic support to the metropolitan municipalities to encourage them to improve their selective waste collection rates. Around 3.3 million euros funding will be granted to 20 municipalities between 2017 and 2018, which have presented innovative projects improving the quantity and quality of the waste collection process as well as monitoring waste generation and addressing large producers.
